September Birth Month Flower
September Flower. The Aster!
The aster gets its name from the Greek word for star because of the shape of its flowers.
The aster symbolizes the tears of the Goddess Virgo who cried after being on earth with her lover.
The flower has the meanings of love, regret, and tenderness.
The aster is a common autumn flower and there are hundreds of species. The flower comes in many shades of blue, purple and white.
Asters are a perennial that is fairly easy to grow. They are a member of the sunflower family and need full sun to thrive.
The hardy daisy-like flowers are beautiful in cut-flower arrangements.
Aster seeds may be planted in early spring after the threat of frost. Cover the seeds with one fourth inch of soil. Water one time after planting seeds and wait for seeds to germinate and grow a few leaves before watering again. Thin plants to have a healthy seedling every 4 to 6 inches. Follow the directions on the seed packet for planting zone and height of the variety. Smaller height should be in front of taller plants to permit full sun.
Asters bloom continuously from spring to the middle of the summer.
