September Birthstone ~ Sapphire

The September birthstone is the sapphire.

A quality sapphire is a very deep blue color, and it is next to the diamond in hardness. The sapphire has been mined for over 2500 years. The ancients believed that the earth rested on a sapphire, and the color of the sky came from its reflection.

Sapphire Mines to Visit

Large stones are rare, but the Star of India in the American Museum of Natural History is over 500 carats. They are a variety of the mineral corundum which is found in every color of the rainbow. The sapphire is the most prized. The sapphire was worn by kings and priests because they believed it symbolized purity and wisdom. They were thought to protect the wearer against poisoning and envy!!!
