How to Grow

History

November Flower. The Chrysanthemum!

The flower comes from Asia and thrives throughout the world. It has been grown in China for thousands of years and is the symbol representing the heads of state in several countries.

Its name comes from the Greek word for "gold flower". Today the flower comes in shades of yellow, red and white.

The chrysanthemum is the traditional flower for football homecomings in the USA and means friendship.

This birthday flower is used in herbal medicine as an antiseptic.

How to Grow

Chrysanthemums are easy to grow perennial, for a November Flower. Follow directions on seed packet for planting zone which means you may plant seeds outdoors after threat of frost.

They thrive best and have the greatest number of blossoms when planted in full sun. For best results feed and water often.

Or as an alternative for your November Flower, buy a chrysanthemum from your local nursery in a one gallon size container. Look for very healthy plant with new leaf growth and new, un-opened flowers. Plant the Chrysanthemum in well-drained soil in full sun. Add fertilizer or potting soil with fertilizer in the hole before planting. Plant to same level as soil in pot, not piling up soil around the plant. Plants should be about one foot apart. Add mulch or wood chips around the plant and water until soil is thoroughly wet. Only in early spring should you trim last year's growth with sharp pruners to prevent disturbing the roots.

RULE: Roots of perennials hate being disturbed!@!#!

In the spring fertilize the soil around the plant avoiding the leaves of the plant. Add more mulch around the plant avoiding piling on top of leaves. Early May cut stems back to 3 inches above the first leaves. Again in early July repeat the trimming to concentrate area of growth around the base of the plant. Trim no more and allow flower buds to form in early fall.

RULE: Perennials need water during hot, dry summer periods to keep soil moist and prevent root stress.
