November Birthstone ~ Yellow Topaz

The November birthstone is the topaz.

It may be yellow, honey yellow, brown, blue, green or clear. There is evidence that the topaz has been known for approximately 2000 years. It may derive its name from Sanskrit or from Greek words meaning green gemstone.

The topaz is believed to protect people from their enemies. This belief includes the protection from sadness, anger, and poisons. It is advertized to make men handsome and women happy!!!

Topaz is a gem quality silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine with the chemical formula Al2SiO4(F,OH)2. Citrine is a variety of quartz. Quartz is the most abundant mineral in the earth's crust (considering continents only). It is made up of a lattice of silica (SiO2) with a color range from a pale yellow to brown.

Topaz and Citrine do not have the same chemical composition, the same gem quality, and same rarity or value. Citrine has ferric impurities, and is rarely found naturally. Most commercial citrine is artificially heated amethyst or smoky quartz.

Pure topaz is transparent and often tinted by impurities which give it a wine or straw-yellow color. Topaz is a greater value gemstone and not easy to find. If buying topaz, ask for an appraisal of authentication by a gemologist.
