History

May Flower - The Lily of the Valley!

The plant has dark green leaves and an abundance of white fragrant flowers hanging like bells on a center stalk.

The plant is native to cool northerm hemisphere in Europe and Asia. The native status of the US species is debated.

The tiny Lily of the Valley plant is said to bring luck in love.

Because it is a spring plant, it is associated with the purity of spring renewal, the sweetness of the cool spring air, and the simple elegance of a tiny perfectly proportioned and fragrant plant.

How to Grow

The Lily of the Valley is a hardy adaptive plant that may be grown in part shade or sun. The plants require well-drained soil and should be planted about 12 inches apart. Mulch around the plant but not over the plantings. Water well and until the ground is soaking wet.

This perfect birthday flower is easy to grow and is a perennial.

Garden Centers sell the Lily of the Valley as sprouts which you plant about 6 inches apart. These plants can be very invasive in woodland areas so take care to limit its boundaries.

The flower grows in the shade best and requires moderate amounts of water. It appears delicate, however it is a very hardy plant. It can bloom as early as March in the Eastern United States.

In the spring when it blooms it may have from 5 to 15 pure white bells on a single stem with two waxy thick leaves protecting them.

A beautiful garden gift for the May birthday is a small contained flower bed in the shade planted with four to twelve rhizomes. All parts of the plant are highly poisonous and should be handled with gloves.
