June Flower
June Birth Month Flower
June Flower. The Rose!
The rose is an ancient flower used by the Greeks and Romans in motifs, on battle armaments, and for perfume. They were presented during state occasions to symbolize loyalty and love.
The Greeks also called the rose the flower of passion. Over the centuries a bouquet of roses and the number of roses in the bouquet sent a message. A single red rose means "I love you".
While all birth flowers have a special place in history and in our hearts, none compare to the rose, June Flower. Roses are considered a formal flower and presented at special occasions. Important US national announcements are made from the White House Rose Garden!
The benefits of adding roses to your garden for the honoree's June Flower are:
COVER A LAMP POST: Because a rose is a perennial flowering shrub or vine, it performs best where it may cling to a strong support.
ADD BEAUTY: There are spectacular hybrids that are easily grown. Roses may enhance the beauty of your front yard with their color and fragrance.
ADD VALUE TO PROPERTY: Flowering gardens increase the value of property.
PERFUMES: Essential oil from roses is called Attar and has been used for centuries for bathing and for perfumes.
JAMS AND TEAS: The eatable fruit of the rose is called Rose hips and they have a high concentration of Vitamin C. Rose hips may be made into jam or steeped with tea.
Prepare the soil by spraying with chemicals that kill fungus and insects.
Plant rose bush according to directions from garden center. Plant roses in rich soil and mulch to prevent weeds and loss of moisture.
Water roses overhead only in morning and give 1 to 1.5 gallons per bush daily or ensure roses receive from 8 to 10 gallons of water per week depending on soil drainage. Too much water will cause Black Spot.
Fertilize with 20-20-20 fertilizer every 3 weeks from June 1 to August 31.
