The larkspur is the common name for a delphinium. The delphinium gets its name from the Greek word for dolphin because the petals look like the fins of a dolphin. The July Flower is very fragrant and blooms on one side of a spike. It is a favorite for flower bouquets because of its strength and frangrance. Bright blue larkspur is an abundant and common wild plant in the eastern USA during the flower month of July. Unfortunately the plant will rot if the soil is too moist, so prepare the soil with about one third sand, one third rich potting soil, and one third peat moss for moisture. Check moisture before watering to maintain moderate moisture. The soil should not be too acidic - add lime if tests show high acidity. Follow the planting directions on the seed packet for planting zone and plant outdoors for best results. After the tiny plants have two full leaves, thin plants to give the flower room for good root development. To do well, they must have a supply of compost or rotted manure. The hollow stalks are strong but when full of heavy flowers, they will snap in a strong wind. Plant infront of fences, stone walls or stake plants.
