History

January Flower ~ The Carnation has a history dating back over 2000 years and is used in all special royal and religious ceremonies.

The ancients included the carnation in their art and building decorations. The fragrance of the January flower, the carnation, is distinct and very plesant.

The January birthstone is the Garnet. Birthday theme colors for January are burgundy or red for the Garnet and white for a white Carnation. Of course, there are beautiful red carnations that may be used for a birthday celebration.

Carnations are used to show love and affection - the perfect birthday flower!!! They come in white, pink, light red and dark red. Some have a small stripe. Marty Robbins sang a wonderful song entitled "A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation)". A song of youthful awareness.

How to Grow

Carnations are perennials and may be started from seed or from cuttings. See these Carnation Resources for more growing techniques.

The seeds may be planted after all threat of frost is gone in well drained soil in a sunny area.

Follow the directions on the seed packet and cover the seeds with about one quarter inch of rich dirt.

The cuttings may be started in moist, but not wet soil and planted with a spacing of eight to ten inches between plants.

Plant in Full Sun

Remember to plant in full sun and in rich, well-drained soil.

Do not allow the plant to completely dry out during dry periods. Water as needed to maintain moisture.

Fertilize every three weeks during the growing season for best results.

They grow to a height of about 18 inches and work as background plants for shorter perennials or as borders in front of evergreen shrubbery.

They bloom from the spring and through summer. The perennial variety is the hardiest and with mulch will winter well.
