January Birthstone ~ Garnet

The January birthstone is the Garnet. The name Garnet comes from the Latin granatus ("grain"), possibly a reference to the pomegranate, a plant with red seeds similar in shape, size, and color to some garnet crystals.

Garnet is a group of minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives.

Garnet birthstone is most often seen in red, but is available in a wide variety of colors spanning the entire spectrum. Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any mineral, occurring in every color except blue.

The garnet has a surprising warm color and looks well in both yellow gold and white gold settings.

A few garnets exhibit a color-change phenomenon. They are one color when viewed in natural light and another color when viewed in incandescent light. Some believe the change in color is a warning or foreboding of enemies approaching!!!
