There are three forms of leather that are made into goods: top grain, corrected grain and split grain.

Top grain or sometimes called full grain is the upper section of a hide that contains the skin layer. Top grain means that the hides have not been buffed or sanded to remove surface imperfections.

Corrected grain leather is sanded or buffed top grain leather. The sanding removes surface imperfection from scars or branding.

Split leather is the fibrous part of the hide remaining after the top grain has been separated from the hide.
