The violet historically has been used to depict virtue and innocence making it a perfect birthday flower for all ages.
It is one of the earliest flower names for girls: Violet, Viola, or Violette. The word is from Latin and means purple. Shakespeare wrote of the heroine Viola in "Twelfth Night".
The February birth flower is a perennial and may be started from seed. They bloom early in the spring and through the summer. They do well outside in beds or inside in containers.
Follow the directions on the seed packet and plant the seeds in full sun.
The violet seeds need to be covered with between 1/8 and 1/4 layer of soil. Water the seeds well.
If you are planting the seeds indoors for transplanting outside, allow six to eight weeks for seedlings to grow and harden for outside.
When planting outside space the plants between 6 to 8 inches apart. Plant after last threat of frost.
