February BirthstoneThe February Birthstone is the Amethyst which is a purple variety of quartz.
It is used today in fine jewelry and displayed in geodes for home decorations. It is found in geodes around the world. A huge geode is called "amethyst-grotto".
Amethyst was used as a gemstone by the ancient Egyptians. Beads of Amethyst are found in Anglo-Saxon graves in England.
The name comes from the Greek a ("not") and methustos ("to intoxicate"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.
The ancient Greeks and Romans wore Amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication!!!
