Birthday Party Rules

Embracing the birthday party rules is the best way to survive a birthday party!

As best you can follow these basic rules for planning, organizing, and executing tasks for the Happy Birthday celebration.

Maybe add your own rules to the list to address your specific situation. The more you can frame the party planning and execution the more perfect the party will be. Please add your own rules to this list if you need more restrictions or have concerns about a specific aspect of the party.

Everything is important and nothing is silly when planning. If you want "no parking on the lawn", then add this rule to the Top 10 Birthday Party Rules below and include buying signs or roping off the areas for parking in your task list.

Managing the details for a Happy Birthday party from begininning to the end will elevate the importance of the special day for the honoree. It will also please the guests and make the preparations easier for all involved.

The best advice is to take time to consider the specific likes and dislikes of the honoree and guests. Their likes and dislikes will help you prepare your own rules. Be open to the idea of writing down specific likes and dislikes (keeping them confidential, of course).

Top 10 Party Rules

1. Never invite people to a party who hate one another. Work with the Honoree to decide who should be invited and stick with the decision. Enough said.

2. Don’t be rude or tacky. Do not throw a theme party for a particular life milestone, such as the Big Five-Oh. The honoree is facing it; don’t pile it on.

3. Remember to be a fabulous host with a very special positive attitude from the beginning until the last guest leaves. All during the preparations there will be stress - stay positive and never regret the decision to have the party. For example, greet each guest with warmth and introduce guests to each other.

4. Provide a clean and safe setting for the party. Plan time in the schedule for removing trash, vacuuming, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and stocking with extra toilet paper, fresh hand towels, repairing broken items, removing harmful items away from children, and arranging furniture/chairs for enough seating. This is the source of the sparkle on the diamond!

5. Have music playing at an appropriate volume for guests, party theme, and neighborhood. Music, food and beverage set the mood for the celebration.

6. Party etiquette is set by example and the host needs to be aware of all situations requiring special handling. Mind your table manners; provide a designated smoking area; present food and beverages appropriately for type of party (informal or formal). Be prepared to manage discreetly uninvited, drunken, or rude guests, as well as any potential conflicts among guests. (See Rule #1).

7. Plan for emergencies, have contingencies or alternatives for food or beverages; ask for help; stay calm and think through the solution. Do not allow under-age drinking of alcoholic beverages by intent or accident. If you are concerned about this, assign a person to monitor the drinks.

8. Have first aid supplies up to date for the inevitable headache, splinter, or burn.

9. Have a supply of plastic wrap, storage containers, trash bags, etc. for leftovers and cleanup of the party.

10. Make and maintain lists for planning, shopping, guests, food, favors, gifts, etc. Make a list by room of tasks. For example, add more chairs to dining area. Assign people to tasks and posts the tasks on the refigerator. The more prepartion in advance and the more people assisting, the less stress for all concerned.
