Birthday Party Music and Lighting

Birthday party music and lighting provide the ambience of the party.

It is one of the responsibilities of the host or hostess to provide the best possible party atmosphere. A perfect Happy Birthday celebration is not accidental.

Great ambience is well-planned! If you have been to restaurants and bars, notice the ones that are inviting and calming. Notice that you do not feel rushed or uneasy in anyway. This feeling comes from the ambience of the room. Ambience is created through lighting, music and temperature.

As the host or hostess you may control all three. It’s easy.

Lighting

The first thing that guests notice when entering a room is the lighting. If it is too low or too bright, it will have an affect on the mood of the guests as much as the birthday party music will.

It is best to not use ceiling lighting for a party; plan to safely use candles, lamps, and string lights. If the lighting is soft, it is more flattering to everyone’s appearance. If you have a fireplace, use it for winter or cool season parties.

In the entry way, create a lighting ambience with a small tray of tea votives. Be careful with scented candles. Some people are sensitive to the perfume if too abundantly used. Place glass jar candles in bathrooms where they cannot be knocked over or touch other objects.

Groupings of different height candles complement each other and give a pleasant feel to a room. More is better when it comes to candles, but you will have to be careful with placement. Mantels, shelves and wall sconces are the safest spots for a party.

If you are having a buffet, place a few unscented candles on the buffet table. Use battery powered candles and lights on tables that need lighting, but are too close to activity. For example, the gift table and desert tables should have soft lighting to enhance the presentation. The bar area should have lamps that shine on the table or counter and not in the face of people standing nearby. Lamps give better directed light for mixing drinks.

Floor lamps are great for Happy Birthday parties. Colored bulbs may be used to create walls or corners of color during the party.

Music

Days before the party, review all the details for the Birthday Party Music. During lulls in conversation, a silent room actually becomes uncomfortable and unwelcoming to guests. Have a clear understanding of the song list, the start time, and most importantly, who will be in charge of the music.

If you are using your own music system, arrange the birthday party music in order of events for the party. The cocktail hour may have snappy but not conversation-drowning music. The dinner hour should have soothing music, such as classical or New Age.

If there is to be dancing at the party, this will require a different selection of music. Then for the “drum roll” events of toasting the honoree and cutting the cake, have some of the honoree’s favorite songs.

With numerous services online to create your own CDs, a private, customized song list is great entertainment.

Music does not run by itself. If you are too busy to handle all the other aspects of the party, assign a friend to help with the music.

If you are lucky enough to have family members who play a musical instrument, ask them to play for a time during the party. The best time is after dinner and before the cake is cut. This is during the clean-up lull and helps keep the party mood going until the cake and coffee are ready.

Room Temperature

The room temperature during a party needs to be comfortable. Several hours before the party turn the thermostat down a few degrees. It is easier to reach a comfortable temperature before the room is filled with added body heat.

Check the thermostat during the party to see what the room temperature has reached. Adjust as needed.

A comfortable temperature is a s important as the birthday party music and lighting!
