Birthday Invitation Etiquette
Birthday Invitation Etiquette requires that individually prepared and mailed invitations are sent for informal and formal parties.
Only if you are close to the date and cannot wait for mail delivery should you use email. The standard fill-in the blank invitations from stationary stores are fine. They serve the purpose and announce the party theme or plans in a way that there is a written, printed record.
The purpose of the invitation is a tasteful reminder to save a date for a special occasion. The more information you can convey in the invitation on theme, colors, likes of the honoree, the more successful will be the Happy Birthday party.
If the party depends on certain key friends, family members or co-workers to attend, please contact them in advance of deciding on the party date.
If you are inviting people from out of town call them six weeks in advance, do not depend on people’s memories and calendar planning. People get busy and forget.
While informal parties require less notice to your guests, as a rule sending the invitation out four (4) weeks prior to the event is best.
If the event is during a busy time of the year (summer vacations, Christmas, etc.), send out the invitation six (6) weeks or more in advance.
