Birthday Cake Tools and Accessories.

The expert cake baker has many birthday cake accessories and tools! These baking tools are for: Measuring and mixing accurately; Improving cake baking results; Presenting the perfect birthday cake beautifully!

The cake pan's dimensions, shape, and condition make it the foundation for all other baking tools. Certain shapes are best for certain recipes and serving size needs.


Measuring and Mixing Tools!

Batter preparations require the following birthday cake tools:

o Mixing Bowls - must be cleaned before each use to eliminate unwanted oils. Should have a lip or spout for pouring batter. Standard mixing bowls come in 1 quart, 1½ quart, and 2½ quart sizes.

o Measuring Cups - should be stainless steel or aluminum. There's no guessing in cake baking!

o Measuring Spoons - stainless steel or aluminum.

o Electric Mixer - hand whipped cake mix is usually grainy, but may be acceptable for the recipe you select. Electric mixers make the batter smooth.

o Rubber Spatula - to push unmixed cake ingredients around the mixing bowl into the batter for the electric mixer to blend. Never use a spatula while the mixer is running. Always, always, always stop the mixer then use the spatula.


For Best Baking Results!

These birthday cake tools are essential for accurate baking:

o Oven Thermometer - test accuracy of the oven's themostat - too hot an oven will dry cake and may burn cake bottom; too low takes longer and makes cake gummy. This is one of the most important birthday cake tools.

o Vegetable Spray - the commercial sprays contain the appropriate oils for hot ovens and give uniform results.

o Parchment Paper - prevents cake from sticking to cake pan.


Birthday Cake Presentation!

Cake platters may not seem like birthday cake tools, but they make serving the cake easier and the special presentation will be appreciated by the honoree and guests.

o Cake Platter – Invest in a large and fancy cake plate or platter. They complete the presentation, make serving easier, and weill be re-used over and over, Antigue shops are great sources for cake stands which were very popular in the 1930's and 1940's.

o Cake Knives for cutting and serving the birthday cake - there are so many designs of decorated cake knives. A cake knife makes a wonderful house gift. It adds an elemnet of elegance and looks perfect laying beside the perfect birthday cake!

o Offset spatula – best tool to spread frosting.

The elbow in the offset spatula adds space for your hand to move around a cake.

It keeps the blade level for smooth spreading of frosting.

Birthday Cake Pans!

o Cake Pans - available in birthday cake theme shapes, reuseable, and must be cleaned before each use. Teflon coated pans are great!

You may want to keep it simple and use only one shape birthday cake pan or combine different shaped pans to make a special presentation for the theme.


Standard Cake Pan Sizes

The standard serving sizes for the traditional birthday cake shapes are:

9 inch round cake serves 8 to 10 people

9x13 inch sheet cake serves 8 to 12 people

Bundt Cake serves 12 to 14 people

Jelly Roll Cake serves 10 people

13x18 (Half Hotel Pan) serves 20 to 24 people


Platters and Plates!

Imagine the most elaborate birthday cake presentation - then evaluate your serving pieces for possibilities. The perfect birthday cake is served on a cake stand!

If you do not have a cake stand or the cake is too large for a stand, the next best is a large platter covered with doilies. If you do not have a platter large enough, cut two layers of cardboard and tape them together. Cover the boards with aluminum foil and then cover the board with doilies. Cake knives are long slender and elegant. For the presentation of the cake use both a cake knife and an offset spatula (the one used to spread the frosting).

The two tools will allow for easy cutting and serving unbroken cake slices. Cake service is usually on an 8 inch plate.
