History

April Flower. The Sweet Pea!

The Sweet Pea came from southern Italy sometime in the 1600's. They got their name from their sweet fragrance. It is believed that when Sweet Peas are kept in the home, they improve your overall wellness. The flower blooms constantly making it a perfect birthday flower.

They grew in popularity and were intensely cultivated in flower gardens in the United Kingdom. They are easy to genetically alter - producing a wide range of colors and heights.

There are over 100 varieties and are very popular in the USA making it the perfect birthday flower. New varieties were developed in Australia that have adapted to the high temperatures there.

How to Grow

Sweet Pea seeds from Unwins may be grown in the garden in the spring.

Follow the directions on the seed packet and sow the seeds about 6 inches apart and about one and a half inches deep.

The Sweet Pea is easy to grow in full sun and not too hot weather. They grow best in rich soil. As most flowering plants require, water sweet peas about twice a week and do not allow them to get too dry. If you remove old blooms before they seed, the plant will continue to flower.

Some varieties grow on a vine and need a trellis to climb. They will spread rapidally, so for best overall gardening results manage the plants within a stone or container border.
